Higher Education Certificate in the Person Centred Approach
The HEC in Person Centred Approaches was developed as a collaboration between Altrum, and Queen Margaret University. It is now delivered by the Thistle Foundation in partnership with QMU, and with support from the Scottish European Social Fund. The quality and value of the coursewas recognised in 2005 by a Scottish Award from the National TrainingAwards and a Lifelong Learning Best Practice Award from ESF ObjectiveThree Partnership.
Bringing together the philosophies of the Person- Centred Approach and Person Centred Planning, this accredited and innovative learningexperience is designed for people who support others to lead valued and inclusive lifestyles based on individual choices and preferences.

The HEC in Person Centred Approaches for Social Care Workers is recognised by the Scottish Social Services Council as an appropriate qualificationfor the registration of staff in the categories Housing Support and Care Home Services for Adults. The course is based on a belief in the importance of the quality of the relationship between the person offering, and the person receiving support. Effective, empowering support which aims to enhance quality of life can only be offered in the context of a relationship that works for both people. The HEC is a journey of discovery, starting with an understanding of self in the context of a helping relationship. Thirteen assessed modules build on one another, expanding knowledge, skills and understanding in ways which enhance the formation of relationships based on trust and respect.
The modules move from exploration and application of the Person-Centred Approach as described by Carl Rogers, to the technique s and skills of person centred planning as developed by Michael Smull and others.By the end of the course, participants have developed skills in reflective practice, recognising that the capacity to monitor our own practice is as vital to the maintenance of high standards of service as external quality assurance systems. The experience and impact of social exclusion is explored in modules dealing with community building; challenging behaviour reputations; sexuality; risk; and equality. Throughout the course, students have opportunities to develop skills which enhance the use of initiative and safe decision-making within the parameters of a clear value base, and consistent with best practice in team working. Students are required to demonstrate learning in their practice through project work, assignments and assessed observation of practice. The course was designed with the needs of adult learners inmind, many of whom have had limited or negative experiences of formal education.
By adopting a person-centred approach to learning, well qualified and highly skilled tutors combine academic learning, practical application and assessment more effectively than traditional teaching approaches would allow. The course takes around two years to complete. On successful completion, a Higher Education Certificate - which sits at level 7 of the Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework - is awarded by Queen Margaret University.
